The Renault Clio Turns 25
If you make a list of some of the world’s most popular cars you are bound to find the Renault Clio somewhere near the top. Little wonder then that this iconic little French number has now come of age and is celebrating its 25th Birthday this year. Originally launched in March 1991 to replace the long-running Renault 5, the Clio has gone on to set all kinds of motor industry records and has helped to establish new standards for refinement and style for the small hatchback sector.
The Renault Clio was first seen at the 1990 Paris motor show and its good looks and Greek name (which means made or to make famous) became the byword for big-car refinement in a small hatchback.
European Car of the Year in 1991 and 2006
The Clio is one of only a handful of cars that have won the title of European Car of the Year title not once but twice, the first time with the original Clio in 1991 and the second time with the Mk3 Clio in 2006. It has also gone on to sell more than 13 million units worldwide, which is no mean feat in a market that has seen many new automobile models come and go.
