Renault’s new logo aligns with Renaulution
If you haven’t heard about the new Renault logo, you’re not alone as it’s been somewhat of a silent launch. While most brands announce their new logos with press releases, social media posts and advertisements, Renault seems to have taken a stealthier approach.
The new Renault logo was recently (and almost secretively) changed to resemble the iconic rhombus design from 1972 but it’s gone mostly unnoticed. They first previewed the new Renault logo on the upcoming Renault 5 EV, which will become an ‘affordable’ compact electric hatchback by 2025.
Surprisingly, they didn’t say much to the public at the time but now it will soon be revealed in an advertising campaign for the Renault Zoé E-Tech.
The Signature Renault Logo Of The Future
The designers of the new Renault logo decided to ditch its signature shiny silver and replace it with a monochrome emblem representing a more “flat design” with angular lines. It actually goes well with the redesigned Peugeot logo which may not be a coincidence considering both brands are linked together as part of the Stellantis group.
The existing design has come a long way since the famous diamond logo took shape in 1992 with the first update in 2015. Fact is, the Renault diamond logo has been redesigned nine times with the automaker adopting the shape in 1925. Restyled in 2015, this new badge of the future is simpler which marks Renault’s progression into a new era.
Taking inspiration from history, the new Renault logo continues with the same silhouette but with interconnecting lines. This helps make the design more relevant to the new generation of Renault cars as they plan on producing EV and autonomous vehicles under the Renaulution strategy.
While it may not be the most flamboyant design, the new flattened Renault logo aligns perfectly with the brand’s future focus. Not only that but the simpler, 2D design will work better in digital format than the current 3D logo with the flat lines enabling animation on video or digital media.
This simpler design is key if you consider in-car tech and how Renault will market its cars in the future. The French automaker has now officially announced that the new Renault logo will be implemented across everything that they do from 2022, including the vehicles, print and social media.
According to Renault’s Design Director, Giles Vidal: “The diamond is one of the most recognised shapes in the world and the world of the automobile. It is a simple geometric shape, with a strong, powerful identity. The challenge was to renew this shape by giving it meaning, along with new, contemporary values to project the brand into the future.”
Final Thoughts
Not everyone will agree with the under-the-radar strategy but it makes sense if they are announcing it ahead of the plan to produce more electric vehicles. It may be a matter of opinion but Renault’s approach is refreshing compared to many companies that often go over the top.
Sometimes simpler is better so whichever side of the fence you’re on, the new Renault logo is not only more practical but it’s also in line with the company’s vision and that says a lot about their intentions.
The first production car to possibly feature the redesigned logo could be the new all-electric Renault Megane in early 2022. However, there’s no official confirmation yet if this is the case or whether it will be available in South Africa. Until then, why not test drive the latest Renault Megane and see for yourself the exceptional build quality and sheer driving pleasure.
