New Kwid Based 7-Seater
The secret is out as the French automaker tests the new Renault Kwid 7-Seater MPV in Chennai. It appears as if Renault is targeting a much lower price bracket with the new 7-Seater Kwid MPV, also known as RBC. The aim is to supplement the brand’s aspirations with the smaller Kwid hatchback and it is likely to fall under the Renault Duster SUV within the group’s lineup.
The RBC will be larger than the Kwid hatchback with a longer wheelbase, increased ride height but remains in the sub-4-meter category. According to the French manufacturer, they want to make the new MPV model affordable to boast a distinct competitive advantage in the segment. The MPV space may have been explored to some extent but the price has always played a vital role.
It appears that Renault wants to explore the less tapped potential in the MPV space below the Ertiga where the RBC will compete against the likes of Datsun’s GO Plus. Perhaps this means that the Renault RBC may not be too far from full-scale production as it is expected to reach showrooms during the first half of 2019.
In terms of design, the Renault Kwid MPV will have a large front grille, distinctive headlamps, LED daytime running lights, a more prominent bumper, and bigger tyres. The RBC is underpinned by a modified version of the Kwid’s CMF-A platform, called the CMF-A+. It will be longer and slightly wider to accommodate the larger MPV dimensions. Wraparound tail lamps and a high mounted brake light integrated on top of the tailgate add further character to the MPV.
Renault has used plastic cladding, faux skid plates and roof rails which provide a slightly more rugged feel to the overall design. The thicker and taller pillars of the Renault Kwid MPV will result in a more spacious and comfortable interior with more legroom and luggage space.
A state-of-the-art touchscreen infotainment system with all the bells and whistles sits nestled in a similar dashboard than the Renault Kwid hatchback. Standard safety features include dual airbags, ABS and parking sensors. It will also feature speed sensing door locks and an impact sensing door unlock system.
The Renault Kwid MPV will likely only have one petrol engine across the range but it may get a turbocharged version of the Kwid hatchback’s 1.0-litre SCe petrol engine. Currently, the naturally aspirated, three-cylinder engine offers 68 kW and 91 Nm where the turbocharged version will provide much more power and torque. The upgraded 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine could be paired with a five-speed manual or an optional AMT transmission.
The Renault-Nissan alliance facility in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu, will build the 7-seater Renault Kwid MPV and we can’t wait to see it drive off the assembly line. While it is unclear when, or if, it will be available in South Africa, keep an eye on our blog and Facebook page for up and coming news.
