Looking at the budget segment in motoring, very few cars can compete with the Renault Kwid. Now, the French automaker has expanded their range offering a new automated manual transmission (AMT) variant but how does it compare to the old one and what is it like to drive?

While the old Renault Kwid AMT performed admirably, the 2018 version seems a better all-rounder with a more sophisticated AMT gearbox and more standard equipment. Perhaps somewhat surprising for the entry-level segment, the price has remained the same even with all the added features and styling.

The design updates on the 2018 Renault Kwid may be subtle but certainly eye-catching with an Easy-R badge on the rear indicative of the new stylish hatchback. At the front, a different chrome grille adds additional style on the AMT and RXT(O) variants while body coloured bumpers, wheel covers and fog lamps are standard on the mid-level RXL and RXT models. Much to the delight for many, the Kwid retains its high-riding stance and chunky wheel wells while still sporting the small 13-inch wheels.

Under the hood reveals the same 1.0-litre naturally-aspirated three-cylinder, 50 kW petrol engine with sufficient torque (91 Nm) in its class. The biggest benefit of this AMT option is, without a doubt, the fuel consumption. The standard manual Renault Kwid claimed 4.7 L/100 km whereas the new AMT model shows an impressive 4.4 L/100 km.

On the inside, the 2018 Renault Kwid AMT looks similar to the manual Kwid with Dynamique trim but has a few added extras. These include a rear-view camera, air-conditioning, front electric windows and one of the most comprehensive infotainment systems in the budget segment. The system has satellite navigation, USB/Aux input, Bluetooth connectivity and speed-sensitive volume control.

A welcome addition is the “creep function” that lightly edges the car forward when taking your foot off the brake pedal. This is incredibly beneficial when driving in heavy traffic battling bumper to bumper driving or creeping. Not only that, it also makes hill starts slightly easier as you no longer need to step on the throttle to avoid rolling back.

In South Africa, Renault is in the top five for new vehicle sales represented by a total of 80 dealerships nationwide. The Renault Kwid has done particularly well since the local launch with sales exceeding 10 500 units. That equates to approximately 659 vehicles per month across the rental and public markets.

The Renault Kwid is a breath of fresh air and has certainly opened up a new market for Renault. They claim that 60% of public sales have been first-time car buyers and with an attractive price offering, it’s no surprise. In December 2017, the Kwid was the third best-selling passenger car with 1 120 vehicles leaving the showroom floor.

If you are looking for a small, easy to drive automatic hatchback with a touch of class, the Renault Kwid AMT is a great choice. It’s near perfect for urban environments with smooth and light steering, excellent visibility all-round and sufficient room for a small family.

What is still somewhat of a concern is the safety rating compared to the brand’s other highly-rated 5-star NCAP vehicles. Renault South Africa has announced that from 2019, the Kwid will receive a front passenger airbag along with anti-lock brakes which will make a noticeable difference. There is no confirmation yet of how the added safety features will impact the overall price but it could be well worth it.
