A Brief History of the Renault Brand

With a history that dates back more than a century, the Renault company was founded by Louis Renault and his brothers towards the end of 1898. It quickly made a name for itself in the earliest form of motor racing when the Voiturette won its first race in the same year. Further victories followed, with one of the most memorable being attained during the Paris-Vienna race in 1904 thanks to the introduction of the first Renault two-cylinder engine.

At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Renault was tasked with supplying the French Military with ambulances, aircraft engines and shells. This was done so effectively that many French soldiers started referring to the Renault’s that took them to war as “Taxis of the Marne”.

The 1920’s saw the adoption of the now much loved diamond shape logo, as well as the opening of the first full scale vehicle production plant in Boulogne-Billancourt just outside of Paris. Growth of the Renault Brand was steady right up to the outbreak of the Second World War, after which the Société Anonyme des Usines Renault (SAUR) became La Régie Nationale des Usines Renault (RNUR), a wholly owned French State Subsidiary.

Through the end of the 1940’s and on to the 60’s Renault increased its model range and it was during this time that such iconic vehicles as the 4CV, Dauphine, Estafette, Renault 4 and Renault 16 (Car of the Year in 1965) were launched.

During the 70’s the world saw the birth of the now legendary Renault 5, but the company was not to rest on its laurels and during the 80’s introduced the Espace – the very first production minivan ever built!

The 90’s heralded a return to racing form for Renault and along with Williams they won the F1 Constructors’ World Champion title in 1992. This decade also saw the privatisation of the Renault company, as well as the opening of its new Renault Technocentre in Guyancourt, France. At the close of the Century Renault and Nissan signed an agreement of cooperation and in the process the Renault-Nissan Alliance was born.

From then on the sky has literally been the limit and Renault has gone on to take over the Romanian automotive brand Dacia, Samsung Motors in Korea, AVTOVAZ in Russia and have successfully started a joint venture with Chinese carmaker Dongfeng.
